Obituary of Georgia Mae O'Sullivan
If the measure of a successful life is what we give, rather than what we acquire, then - as a final gift - Mom has once again shown us how to live. With generosity, warmth and wisdom, Georgia enriched the lives of her family, extended family, neighbors and friends.
Georgia Mae was born on a farm October 12, 1923 in Linn, Missouri to George and Wilhelmina Voss. She was the middle child of nine.
Mom attended St. George Catholic School and Linn High School, graduating in 1941. She worked as a clerk in the Osage County Courthouse in Linn before moving during WWII to St. Louis. There, sharing an apartment with sisters and friends, Georgia was employed as a payroll clerk for an arms manufacturer and later Columbia Quarry. These were exciting years, highlighted by meeting army air corpsman William O’Sullivan.
Georgia and Bill married on December 27, 1947. They raised five children in a home full of faith and love.
Mom was a member of Catholic Daughters, assisted the Golden Age Society and volunteered for Birthright and F.I.S.H. She was a eucharistic minister at St. Joseph’s Church and Good Samaritan Hospital.
Mom loved playing cards, gardening, quilting, cooking, and baking cakes for Dad. She was joyful and witty, the epitome of grace and dignity.
When necessary, however, Georgia was a tower of strength. In her mid-80’s – after Bill was tragically stricken with Parkinson’s disease – she summoned the energy of her youth and took care of him for the final years of his life. Dad passed away November 24, 2012.
Mom had a full and joyful life. We are grateful to God that she was our mother.
Georgia is survived by her children: Ann Malone and her husband Larry of Schenectady, NY; Mary Kathryn Insull and her husband Kevin of Franklin, VA; Eileen Maurer of Mastic, NY; Mark O’Sullivan and his wife Sue of Staatsburg, NY and Joan Fenton and her husband Tim of Fort Myers, FL.
Mom and Dad were blessed by 19 grandchildren; Brian Malone, Stephanie Whelan, Catherine Smitis, Craig Maurer, Megan Miklosovic, Josh Insull, Karen Gavin, David Maurer, Erin Amin, Gretchen Vaillancourt, Debi Maurer, Thomas Malone, Matt Insull, Shawn Fenton, Eileen Lynch, Jimmy Maurer, Gregory Fenton, Andrew Fenton and Mary Rooke, 30 great grandchildren and 55 nieces and nephews.
Georgia was predeceased by five of her eight siblings: Francis Voss, Augusta Buhr, Irma Meyer, Maryann Dennon. She is survived by three sisters: Margaret Kliethermes, Laurie Dowdy and Patty Schnieders.
