Deepest condolences. I was sad to hear the news of his passing. I met Bob in the Ross high school radio station. He had infinite patience for us as students and I remember taking the bus into the city to get my FCC license. He is fondly remembered for his wonderful personality and silky smooth radio voice. I was fortunate to hear him in the announcer booth at his beloved Ducks game.

I was so saddened to hear of Bob’s passing. He was an amazing man who really touched so many lives.
When I was younger, my parents were considering sending me to Catholic HS. During the planning and discussion stage, I had seen a flyer for WXBA posted in my Jr High School. I was so excited about the idea of a student run radio station that I told my parents that I needed to stay in the Brentwood School District, just so I could experience the radio station. They reluctantly agreed. When I finally got to High School, I sought out the radio station and found Bob Ottone. I remember staying after school in the library and taking classes for the FCC radio telephone operators license and how cool it was to actually receive it. (I still have the card in my year book).
I probably spent more time at the radio station and with Bob, than with any other teacher or program. He taught me the value of good leadership by promoting me to Production Director and finally to Program Director. With his guidance, I learned how to manage people and lead by example. Though I never pursued a career in radio (it was never my ultimate goal), Bob taught me a great deal about managing my responsibilities and following through on my commitments. He was one of my favorite teachers, he always gave of himself for his students and the station and he has always held my deepest respect both as a person and an educator.
Please accept mine and my family’s condolences on his passing and thank you for sharing his life with us (his students) for all those years.

His obituary says he was an “esteemed mentor to the many students he taught throughout the years”. I am one of the luckiest students in the world, to say I was one of them. Mr. Ottone fostered my love of music and promoted my independence (while keeping and getting me out of trouble). The radio station was a safe place for me (and many others). When I graduated, he gave me the Chipmunk Punk vinyl which is proudly displayed in my living room to this day. The many lessons he taught me are always with me too!
All my prayers and love to your family.

What a special man Bob was. He believed in me and didn’t let me take myself seriously when it came to being on the air. He trusted me as music director before I trusted myself. He changed my life and many others. Sending love and prayers to all his family and friends.

I first met Bob in the summer of 1980, when I joined Brentwood High School's radio station WXBA-FM. I then became News Director for the following year. Bob's warm, nurturing manner and good humor helped me with my confidence issues and gave me my start in journalism. May his memory be a blessing.
