When my brother Philip died on Jan 17th, I had recently returned from a ten day visit in NY to spend time with him. I was so glad I got to spend that quality time.
So on Jan 17th , back on Maui, I felt so very far away from NY.
A friend who was here visiting from the mainland came to me that day with a beautiful tuberose lei. If you have not smelled tuberose then you do not know what you are missing. It can fill a room with the smell of the tropics. Leis are not usually used for condolence but for celebration.
I knew I needed to celebrate Philip. The next day I headed to the beach with my tuberose lei. Flowers are often sent out into the ocean in memories of others. I cut the string of the lei ( We do that to protect our sea creatures from eating string) and I set out as far as I could go. I am not a good swimmer so I made in to a 6 or 7 foot depth. Philip was a great swimmer and in my early years often "rescued" me from the sea. He loved the ocean.
I carefully removed each rose and set it out with a prayer for Phil. Roses floated all around me and I knew Phil knew. I will miss him terribly.

Dear Barbara, Chers cousins Lynn, Larry et Debby
We were in Cuba with Linda and Gerard when we received the message and it has been impossible to contact again. Back in Paris to- day( me alone), I want to tell that you all have been in our thoughts during these days. We were remembering this time you all came for this family meeting in Paris , one year after my father passed away in october 2004 . Philip and Barbara stayed in a hotel in Rue de Vaugirard and I think of them each time I walk past the door. After that we met in New york for Stephanie's wedding. And every year for Hanuccah I had my greetings card...
Dear cousins, we are really dispersed, but close in the heart. When I look at Philip's photo I feel such a close resemblance with the men of the family..
Let'us try to gather again.
Grandes et fortes bises

He was one of my favorite brothers. He was a great protector, a tough guy, a soft hearted sweetie. Although we were 13 years apart, we were very close.
Our relationship changed over the years, I rode on his shoulders in the ocean when I was young, he used to pick me up from kindergarten and give teachers rides to the subway (he was very proud of this) and then drove me to our parents shop. When he worked as a school photographer and came to my schools he would always have my photos retouched so I looked so pretty. The other girls didn't get that. As adults our sarcasm was evenly matched and we dueled with words. He got me and I got him, I will really really miss him.

Phil you will always be remembered for your charm and wit. Most of all I will remember you as the Love of a Lifetime for my very dearest friend. May all your cherished memories bring peace to Barbara's heart and all those you touched during your journey. May Toby be dropping fur balls to show you the way as you
did for him. We can only hope our journey continues with our departed love ones. If that happens, maybe you can find a way to let us know before hand. Thanking you in advance :-). You always knew a little laughter is good for the soul. You will be missed. Rest in Peace.

Dear Philip,
Thank you for bringing life, laughter and vibrancy to all of us.
Some random memories flood my mind:
As a kid you would always rough-house with me - and wow, you were strong! I remember thinking "Watch out for that guy - don't let him get near you!" When I shared this with mom she recalled how you once picked her up when you were kids and cracked her rib... and when you tried it again later how grandma (Cecile) shouted, "Don't touch her - she breaks!" LOL!
Of the four siblings you were the comic: I remember you once joked, "Marriage is a great institution, but who wants to be institutionalized?!" and - "I love a King size bed... it's just big enough so you don't know anyone else is sleeping there!" Well Phil - God certainly made up for your early experiences with a great woman in Barbera, didn't he?
You also had a memory a mile long - I was amazed how I couldn't stump you on popular songs over the span of many decades - we had some fun conversations with this, and you always remembered dates and places better than anyone.
And finally, you had a great nose for B.S. and would call people out on it: "You went to beauty school for two years to learn to apply makeup from bottom to top? - I could'a told you that in two minutes!"
You were built like a bear but you were a true gentle-man. The world could use more men like you. Thank you for lighting up OUR small part of the world with your beautiful soul, my dear uncle Philip.
All my love,
your nephew Dave.

Hi Phil, it’s Chris! Well you were my buddy for 54 years, we had some laughs, we had some wonderful family dinners at your moms, weddings, birthdays and all the good and not such good things that families go through together.
I think one of my most cherished part of our relationship is that you always made me feel part of the family from day one. I’m sure that you are with your mom and dad now and how wonderful for your mom to be hugging you again. I know how much she loved you.
I will miss you Phil, Rest In Peace, with love Chris

Barbara, we are truly saddened by the loss of Phil. We will miss our card games and monthly dinners out. We do know that Phil is now without pain and we will all be together in the future up in heaven where he is "busy" preparing a game table for us when we are all together again. Try not to dwell on your loss, but let the wonderful memories of the 30+ years you shared give you comfort because Phil's life was richer because of you. We love you and we love and loved Phil. We will also be there for you when you need us.
