To My Friend Jim,
I can't believe you were taken away from us so young. Some of my best life experiences I shared with you. My life would not be the same if it wasn't for that 4th of July weekend in 1996 when we hit it off and became friends. Remember I drove you home that weekend. You and your group of great friends welcomed me into your family. I met my wife while attending a Christmas Eve party that you and John hosted. A party that I didn't want to go to because my own Italian family were having their own holiday celebration, but you convinced me to just drop in later for drink. Glad I did! When I approached you that night and asked about the attractive girl wearing the purple dress and if she was single, your response was "many have tried few have succeeded" I never forgot that line and often tell that story to family and friends. How about the time you and I were in Hunter Mountain, after a Saturday night of pure fun you and I woke up to an empty house and at least 6" of fresh snow on the ground. The both of us being of the few skiers in the house we decided to ceased the moment and head to the slopes. With just had enough money for us to get home for gas and tolls (before Ez-pass) after purchasing our lift tickets. We skied the whole day and had some change left over to even grab a small bite to eat. We had a great time that day. But Jim that was just how you were, care free and spur of the moment. Being around you made things more fun and adventurous. I will always cherish our friendship and it was one of my greatest honors to have you as one of my grooms men at my wedding.
Till we meet again,
Rob S

Hearing the news of your passing is very sad. I know that we have all grown apart, but you are still remembered. When we did see each other, it was like nothing had ever changed. You were fun, enthusiastic about life, and provided your typical sense of humor on random topics of life and social non sense.
It was good to be your classmate for over 5 years. We shared a lot of experiences learning and growing up. I will always remember those long days at cooper, whether in the classroom, working on projects, or studying for tests. Of course, I will never forget the column your wrote called "The Wrong Number," which added your humor to collectible phonecards. You were one unique person that never seemed to get too down on anything, and always had a positive outlook, even if you failed another test, lost your Rush Album collection, or the day was just not going your way.
You will be missed, but always remembered. On behalf of the class of 1992, my wife (Laura), and my family, I want to extend my condolences to your family and friends.

On behalf of the ChE class of 1992, we will miss you. You always added the humor into a dry and boring classroom of nerdy Cooper students trying to learn a subject that nobody had any interest to learn. The ChE class of 92 will miss you.

I wanted to share this image of my last conversation with Jim (June 2017). Of course, Jim would always put things into his own perspective in the most humorous way. He always loved to do it to me, because he knew I was always the serious one. Jim never took things to serious, which I always admired.

This is a good group shot of some 1992 alumni. For those that went to Cooper, I hope you recognize these folks.

One last brief story. As we often met at my house, In front of the blazing log fire, with wine and beer, late in the night, we would sometimes tussle, 6 or 7 bodies deep, with nobody given special relief. I thought this through, and realized that Jim, Ian, Yash and the rest had discovered something important. Our scuffle showed that lines of authority are as naught. A person, like Jim, had a unique body of knowledge and a unique way of presenting it. Being pinned down by all my graduate students altered fundamentally the way that I interact with every person -- no lines of authority, no superiority, no assumption of "bietter", and perhaps Jim's legacy, for me, in one dimension is this: respect me for what I am. In his case a great deal. Despite my bruises.

Cathy. Jim came to me looking for someone to take care of him as he lost his way a little as a graduate student. I saw his potential and moved him into my office, with my other beloved graduate students, who became firm friends, and we established ourselves as a Cooper family. His cheery disposition was one of his best assets, as was his patience as I steered his progress (knowing nothing about "slurry").
Each week, we would enjoy a meal together, magically devoid of discord but with only colorful stories. He visited my house many times and was welcomed, becoming known to my young girls as "Uncle Jim". There were many uncles then! The group would lounge long into the night in front of a blazing wood fire. And beer.
Jim had many great ideas, and would cold call me for clarification of some technical detail. Lately with his family duties and loyalties, this was how we remained in touch. It was a faint reminder of the perhaps four years in which we shared my office, and I saw him daily.
I remember him, and the group, attempting to shield me from my then chairman, whom I really did not want to engage with at that moment, so took refuge under my desk. Alas, my chair was too alert -- perhaps the shielding was too strong -- and I was caught!
Jim was up for doing anything for anybody, and I cannot imagine the loss that you must be feeling, so I am stopping short of offering "thoughts and prayers" as that is utterly inadequate. I am pleased and proud to have shared part of his life, some terrific experiences, and the chance to help a really smart and funny and kind man. I miss him.

Jim stands just to the right of his namesake, Jim Kirk, who happened to be there, that day, gathering advice on Engineering. To everyone else, please tag yourselves if you wish. My class of graduate students.

We shared a grad office at Cooper as the cherry on top of years of friendship. You were so generous with welcome support, good counsel and a laugh whenever needed. The memories of the Carty's nights, the karaoke nights, the Brooklyn parties (legendary and we STILL tell stories!) and many more are flooding in. Just know you will never be forgotten, and you were much loved by many. May you find the peace you deserve. It was an honor to know you Jim!
One of our favorite tunes in the grad office:
"Oh, we can be heroes just for one day"

Rest In Peace, Jim.
My deepest condolences to the Donnellan family and friends.
I will always remember Jim for having one of the most infectious spirits.
My Cooper Union experience would've been a lot less colorful without him there.
God Bless.

My condolences to family and friends!
Jim was an excellent human being, a person I considered a friend. He was always happy to talk with you. One of the funnier quirks Jim had was his haircut and how he dreaded getting Ramon, but didn't want to say no.
Best wishes to getting the perfect cut up there.
