I was a Rangers' seasons ticket holder from 1968-1992, so I was there at the beginning of John's MSG career. Loved his enthusiasm and his smile. Even after I stopped going regularly, I always hoped that the TV coverage would show the anthem.
We moved to Plainview in July, 1994. Had no idea I had moved into his town until much later.
He was as much a part of 1994 as the players.
RIP John

To the Family of John Amirante: being a Ranger fan for over sixty years, Tuesday was truly a sad day. In a day when singers forget the words, John poured his heart and soul every time he sang our National Anthem. Not only did he make you proud to be a Ranger fan but also made you proud to be an American. I, along with thousands of Ranger fans have been blessed to be able to experience John. A man like him is not born everyday and if I make it to heaven I will look forward to hearing him sing it again, but for now I will enjoy it in my memory. Your family is in my prayers.

Never missed a game at MSG that John performed the National Anthem. John always stopped by my seat afterwards on his way to his seat even if it was for 15 seconds just to say hello.. Years ago the Daily News ran a full page article on him and asked me if I knew anyone that could put it on canvas. My friend who worked for them had it done. John could never stop thanking me for it.
My Mom made a tin of home made cookies for him and he told me to let her know the next game when he was done singing his usual one salute would be followed by a second salute for her. He did not disappoint. He was as classy a man that has ever stepped onto the ice at MSG. I'm a 62 year season ticket holder for the Rangers and NO ONE has come close to the sound and passion that he put into that song. One of the greats have gone and I hope MSG puts a well deserved banner up in his memory.
God Bless you John and your family. Your friend Freddie.
