Obituary of Marian J. Rogan

ROGAN Marian J. (née Steuerwalt), 93, died March 22, 2018 on Long Island, NY.  She was born October 19, 1924 in the Bronx, New York.  She is predeceased by her beloved husband, John C. Rogan, son Matthew, brothers Sidney and Henry, and sisters Margaret and Julia.  She is survived by her son Christopher and wife Margaret, son Gerard and wife Ellen, daughter Bernadette and husband Vincent A. Benenati, daughter-in-law Melissa Rogan, 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

During the 1950s, she was a trendsetter, becoming one of the first female corrections officers in New York and then later, one of the NYC’s first female police officers.  It was a duty and obligation she felt called to do and when asked about her time in service, she spoke passionately about it.  She met her future husband while in the police academy, a beautiful relationship that spanned over six decades.  After John retired from the FDNY in the late 1980s, the couple moved to Westport, NY, overlooking the majestic Lake Champlain where they resided for the next twenty plus years.  Their home became a winter and summer haven for their children and many grandchildren, who spent their time skiing, fishing, boating and hiking.  She spent time making the home feel warm for her family; many pictures of ducks and numerous antiques adorned the home.

Marian was loved and admired by her entire family and is fondly remembered for her Irish wit, wisdom and charm.  She found comfort in her Catholic faith and strong belief in God, which helped her through even the most trying of times.
