I was searching for a certain ENT online, one who I thought would get a kick, many years after the fact, out of hearing "you were right, and you were better than the technology." When I saw Dr. Sampogna's name, I finally and instantly remembered all the details of my visit to him that had been escaping me for so long. In searching for a way to get a message to him, I was so sad to learn that I'm too late. I hope that it's OK with you, his loved ones who may read this, to leave this little story about a problem that Dr. S. detected when other doctors, machines, and the blood tests could not.
With his gifted hand, Dr. S. detected something in the base of my neck. An ultrasound didn't see anything & the other doctor didn't feel anything. Years later, after I'd broken a second rib, my usual PC chalked it up to my age. His younger colleague said, "at 59, you're not that old, we should figure out why you're breaking ribs." A simple blood test revealed a hyperparathyroid gland. Further tests showed that it was huge and I was told that it was probably there for years. I'd developed osteoporosis, and although they can't make a direct correlation, I was told it's probably related.
I've wanted to tell Dr. Sampogna he was right, but couldn't remember his name. The saddest part is that I just had the surgery to remove this problem a few months before he passed away. I hope that such a good person gets some sort of privilege in heaven that allows him to see all his old patients, and that he knows that I finally found out what you surely knew all along; just how special he was.
Thank you for "listening."

I wish there were adequate words to express how much Dr Sam, meant to me. He was a dominant medical force at SSH, as an ED RN you could always count on him to come in when called for any case, emergent or Non, He was happy to teach us youngi RNs! In later years I had the privilege to help him, always Humble , he never wanted special treatment . Diane was always at his side totally devoted and loving . You will be missed Sam! Always know and I know u do you are loved by many, there is a huge empty space left by you!

I'm very sorry to hear of Dr. Sampogna's passing. I only met him once at my Uncle Marco Sampogna's wake.
You can see from my name there is some sort of relationship. My father was Nicholas; his father was Domenico who was married to Angela Rotundo. My grandparents lived in Maspeth Queens. My grandfather was also from Guardiareggia.
I was by him told that his grandmother and my grandmother were twin sisters but I'm not sure if that's correct.
I remember hearing of him when I was young in that there were "4" of us; Dominick Sampogna's. My parents, Nick and Lucy also visited him professionally. They said very nice things about him.
During my professional career I worked with the IT people at Brookhaven and we had the discussion about our same names.
I'm sorry I won't be able to pay my respects but your family certainly has our sincere condolences on the passing of a great person.
Sincerely,
Dominick Sampogna

Today there is a great void in our hearts. To say that you have touched our lives with your kind and humbling spirit is an understatement. For the times you lent us an ear, thank you. For the times you filled our ears with laughter, thank you. And for the times you, without request but out of the pure goodness of your heart, gave us a hand thank you. We will be eternally grateful to have known an angel on earth and from this day on we will miss you. We will hold on to our memories as our keepsake. Although God has you in his keeping, we will have you in our hearts. We love you Dr. Sam.
