Obituary

Mary “Maureen” Frances Browne passed away on August 27, 2024 near her home in Long Island, New York. Maureen was born to Michael and Mary Duffy, both immigrants from County Mayo, Ireland, on September 13, 1936. She grew up in Clason Point in the Bronx with her three siblings, Thomas, Joan, and Eugene, who all passed before her. On September 8, 1956, Maureen married Edward Francis Browne, who was also a son of Irish immigrants, born in the Bronx on October 17, 1932 and who passed away in 1981. Maureen was a lifelong New Yorker who loved to talk about growing up in the “old neighborhood” where her father had a pub called “Duffy’s Tavern”, she had goats in her backyard, and she spent days swimming in Westchester Creek and roasting “Mickies” (potatoes) with other kids from the neighborhood. Maureen was proud of all the jobs she had held in her lifetime, and after graduating from Thorpe Secretarial School, she commuted on the El into Manhattan to work before joining her husband, a computer operator, at Northrup Grumman, where she worked for 22 years as an executive assistant until her retirement in 1995. Maureen was a true ‘they-just-don’t-make-‘em-like-that-anymore’ type of lady. She had an insatiable sweet tooth, was quick to the dancefloor, was welcoming to all she met, and loved the important things in life—good company, good food, and decent crime dramas. We’ve never heard a voicemail as full as Maureen’s. She was constantly surrounded by her five children, Eileen (Robert), Maureen (Sergio), Edward (Nancy), Christine (Brian), and Patricia, her ten grandchildren, Rob, Katie (Harry), Matthew, Erin, Julia, Gregory, Brian, Alex, Eddie, and Evan, as well as extended family and lifelong friends who always found time to check in. Maureen was magnetic like that. She had a wicked sense of humor, a timeless sense of style, and an affinity for all things Irish. What Maureen loved most was spending time with us, and we felt the same. May the road rise up to meet her.
