Obituary
Stephen Moriarty was born on October 6th, 1930 on Manhattan’s Lower East Side to Catherine Cody and Stephen Moriarty. Stephen’s father passed away when he was a young child. Years later, Catherine married John Ferraro, giving Stephen two sisters, Judy and Suzanne, and his late brother Johnny.
After graduating from Bishop Laughlin High School in Brooklyn, he was drafted into the US Army during the Korean War in 1951 and served through 1953 as a Military Police Officer at Fort Richardson outside Anchorage, Alaska. After discharge from the Army, he returned to New York City and joined the NYPD in 1955 as a patrolman. He served with the NYPD for over 30 years in various precincts, including 20 years at the 103rd Pct. in Jamaica, Queens, retiring as Detective in 1985. For his entire police career, he was a member of the Holy Name Society, an organization of Catholic NYPD officers. Starting as a patrolman and rising to the rank of a detective, his service for New York and the nation was admirable.
Around the time he joined the NYPD, Stephen met his future wife, Mary Murphy, at an Irish dance in Manhattan. They married in November 1956 and moved to Hollis, Queens soon after. They would start their family there and later move to Brentwood, Long Island in 1960 where they would reside for the next 30 years.
Steve was an avid lover of the beach, enjoying daily walks on Long Island and Jupiter. He had a quick wit which he loved to share with family and friends. He also stayed in touch with his longtime partners in the NYPD, brothers to the end. Steve was a long-suffering Mets fan and was regularly spotted each summer on his patio or porch listening to Mets game on his favorite AM/FM radio. He also loved his many trips with Mary to visit her family in the West of Ireland and was a regular in pubs on Quay Street in Galway on those visits.
.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Steve was unfailingly loyal to his family and never missed an opportunity to spend time with them. From getting a Guinness at a local restaurant, to telling his grandchildren his countless life stories from his famous and favorite leather chair, Steve loved his family.
He had a fervent and lifelong devotion to his Catholic faith, and was an active member at St. Anne Parish in Brentwood for over 30 years and St. Patrick’s Parish in Jupiter for 25 years.
Stephen Moriarty is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Murphy Moriarty; children, Stephen Moriarty and wife Vicky, grandsons Stephen, Timothy, and Patrick of Oklahoma City, OK; Michael Moriarty and wife Cindy, grandchildren Jack, Holly, Grace, and Katherine of Islip, NY; Patricia Lazio and granddaughters Molly and Kelsey of Brightwaters, NY; and Suzanne Moriarty and husband Mark, granddaughters Fiona and Nora of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by his sisters Judy Moran of Longwood, FL and Suzanne Ingoglia of Flemington, NJ.
Stephen Moriarty is remembered as a caring father, loving older brother, and loyal friend. He will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family during visiting hours on Thursday, April 25 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Chapey & Sons Funeral Home at 1225 Montauk Highway. The funeral mass will be held be on Friday, April 26 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church at 9 Clinton Avenue. He will be interred at Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn.
