Obituary

Patrick J. Gilbride, 82, of N. Massapequa, passed away peacefully on Monday July 10th, in his home with his wife by his side. He was born on July 22, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Margaret (Monigan) Gilbride and Charles Gilbride. Patrick was top of his class at Visitation Grammar School and at Power Memorial Academy in NYC. He grew up playing stickball, baseball and basketball in Red Hook, and later became an accomplished bowler and avid golfer. After High School, Patrick began working at Manufacturers Hanover Trust which began a 37-year banking career, mostly at Chemical Bank (later JP Morgan Chase). Throughout his banking career, he also attended college at Brooklyn College, Baruch College, Pace University, Georgia Tech and Florida State University. Throughout his life, Patrick loved sports. He grew up a Brooklyn Dodger fan, and Pee Wee Reese was by far his favorite player. He was sure to bring his family to Cooperstown in 1984 to see him get inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame. After the Dodgers’ sad departure to LA, Patrick adopted the Mets. He managed to keep track of their improbable pennant run in 1969 while on his honeymoon. He was also an avid Ranger fan, and was there in 1994 when they finally won the Cup.

.

Even more than sports, Patrick loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Grace, of 55 years, his son Patrick (wife Lauryn) and daughter Laura, and five grandchildren, James, Kathryn, Isabella, Aidan and Nadia. They have many fond memories of family vacations, BBQ’s by the pool and attending soccer, track and baseball games. Through it all, Patrick and Grace were side by side, for better or for worse. This was no more apparent than during the final years as Patrick suffered with vascular dementia and Grace cared for him every day. A visitation will be held on Thursday July 13th from 4:00 – 7:00pm at Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in Bethpage. A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:15am at St. James R. C. Church in Seaford, with interment to follow at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association would be appreciated.
