Obituary

Dr. Joseph James Nicols Jr. passed away peacefully on December 11, 2021 surrounded by the love of his family at the age of 85. Born August 20, 1936, the son of the late Gertrude and Joseph James Nicols, Sr., he was raised in Brooklyn, attending St. Francis Preparatory School and St. Francis College on an athletic scholarship for track and baseball. He enjoyed telling stories of his days as a baseball player and the famous players he met along the way. Foregoing an opportunity to play professional baseball, he fulfilled his dream of joining the U.S. Navy and went on to graduate from Georgetown University School of Dentistry and New York University earning the designation of Doctor of Dental Surgery becoming a licensed Oral Surgeon. He completed his residency in Wilmington, DE and Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL where he met his wife, Patricia Ann Nicols. He proudly served the U.S. Navy for 35 years under both active and reserve duty retiring with a rank of Captain. Joseph and Patricia share three children, Lynne, Joseph and Michelle, whom they raised in West Islip, NY. Joseph loved his work and caring for people who needed dental treatment. He was the Dental Director for Suffolk County for nearly 20 years, operated a private practice in West Islip for 45 years, and served as a doctor on staff at Good Samaritan Hospital throughout his career retiring in February 2020 as Director of Oral Surgery.

Joseph “DOC” was well known for his love of fishing. In his spare time, he would always make sure he got his fishing adventures in and spent a lot of time in Florida deep sea fishing with his fishing buddies. He was very proud of his grandchildren and was very eager to show them how to catch “the big one”. We know he is up in Heaven trying to catch that big one now! He also loved watching his favorite baseball team, the Yankees. If he wasn’t fishing, he was watching baseball. He also enjoyed reading and watching American History and WWII documentaries. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Nicols, daughters Catherine Lynne (Kemper) Smith, Michelle (Kevin) Bryant, son Joseph J Nicols III (Maria Voulamandis), and grandchildren, Montana Lee Smith, Kevin Bryant II, William Bryant; Matthew Bryant,Thomas Bryant; Gianelle Nicols and Julian Aquilar. He is also survived by his sister Loretta Riley; and many nieces and nephews, including Terrence Rice with whom he was very close. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude and Joseph James Nicols, Sr., his sister, Lorraine Irene Rice, whom he absolutely adored, and brothers in law, James Rice and James Riley. Relatives and friends are invited to visit the family of Joseph at Chapey & Sons Funeral Home, 1225 Montauk Highway, West Islip, NY on Monday, December 27, 2021 from 4 – 7 pm. A mass will be held at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 39 N. Carll Avenue, Babylon, NY on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at 10 am. Joseph will be laid to rest with military honors on a future date. He is loved deeply by family and friends and will remain in our hearts forever.
