Obituary

Noel Patrick MacDermott, 86, passed away peacefully during his sleep on December 13, 2020. Noel was born on January 6, 1934 in Dublin, Ireland as the youngest of four children: Lily, Donal, Andrew and Noel. The family was raised in Offaly County, a rural section of central Ireland. January 6th is an important date in the Irish Catholic calendar. It signifies the day the three wise men arrived to meet baby Jesus and it is the twelfth and final day of the Christmas season. His parents named him Noel in honor of this important day. Noel emigrated to the United States in 1959 and became a United States citizen. He was a quiet and sincere man, a dedicated family person, and a hard worker. He married his sweetheart, Angela, on July 1, 1961 and raised a family of five sons: Michael, Kevin, Brian, Neil and Raymond. While their married life began in the Bronx, they moved to Long Island in 1966 and raised their family in West Islip. Noel worked for Pan American Airlines for more than thirty years. He was very proud of his time working for a prestigious airline. He followed up his time with that airline with two additional careers – the elevator operators’ union in NYC and as a school bus driver in his hometown of West Islip. In all his jobs, Noel formed friendships with coworkers that far outlasted his time as an employee. His religious community was extremely important to him. He was an active member of Our Lady Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in West Islip for more than fifty years. Noel is survived by his wife of 59 years, Angela, his five sons and their spouses: Michael & Sharon, Kevin & Dawn, Brian & Sarah, Neil & Renee and Raymond & Helen, and fifteen grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 21, and he will be laid to rest on Tuesday, December 22.
