Obituary

Michael Abraham Bekele was born on June 10, 1975 in Brooklyn, NY to Dr. Abraham Bekele and Shewangizew Mammo. A son of Ethiopia, a proud American and a citizen of the world. Michael’s greatest success is his family. He was introduced to his amazing and brilliant wife, by his cousin in 1998 and they immediately fell deeply in love. They laughed, loved and lived -- traveling the world on exotic adventures. The two had three precious children, Helena, Noah and Samuel. His legacy will forever live through them and their future generations. To his kids, he passed on his love of family, friends, sports, movies, and all things Marvel. Anyone who crossed paths with Michael would not soon forget him. He had a larger than life personality. He lived life to its fullest and wanted everyone around him to do the same. He loved to laugh, and no one was exempt from his pranks. He was generous but most of all he loved intensely. He was the first person to show up, to offer help and to corral all of us to gather in celebration or grief. Losing him will leave a gaping hole in all of us, but we are all lucky to have had him in our lives. Michael is survived by his wife, Fasika Sahlu and his children, Helena Bekele (13), Noah Bekele (11) and Samuel Bekele (7), his mother, Shewangizew Mammo, his father, Dr. Abraham Bekele, his sister, Nicole Ansoni and countless aunts, uncles and cousins. On behalf of his family, we all thank you for your kind words and your support during this difficult time.
